Crossing over...to Opera-land!

Yes, its true.  The program I am currently in requires me to take both Classical and Musical Theatre voice lessons each week.  I have art songs and arias in addition to my musical theatre repertoire for my semesterly juries.  And so last semester I stepped out of my comfort zone and auditioned for my first opera.  You know the piece of paper you often have to fill out before every local audition?  Well after "Name" and "Year in School" it said "Voice Type".  This was a classical audition so I know I am supposed to fill in the proper Fach for myself...but since I had no idea what that was I wrote "Female".  And next to it was another category asking "Years of Study"...to which I had to answer..."One".  I felt like a fool, and yet it was completely laughable and so I laughed at myself, went in and did my first audition in a concert hall and wound up cast as Mimi in our upcoming production of Giacomo Puccini's famed La Boheme.  And believe it or not, we're doing it in Italian.  I hear that is unusual for college programs, but I wouldn't know.  So..."Go big or Go HOME," I suppose!  Please, if you're around the area, come see me perform in what is possibly the only opera I will ever do March 28/29th, 2015 in State College, PA.  I am working my tail off and am hopeful to be a worthy student of the art form.
